Hand-applied finishing

precisely detailed

LaPolla Inspired Flooring’s custom finishing processes and techniques are unlike a topical “stain” or conventional floor application. When we hand finish each plank in our studio or on site, we improve the aesthetic depth and performance of each floor plank by using a combination of old-world techniques and advanced treatment technologies.  Before any timber enters into our finishing process we actually catalyze the base color of the timber by way of oxidation, fuming, and many other pre-treatments. Each treatment within our process is applied one board at a time like furniture allowing us to scrutinize and evaluate each piece of flooring as it is being completed and eventually installed. This allows for tonal adjustments and range improvements through each finishing phase.  Additionally, this enables us to use minimal pigments which typically block and hide the timber’s natural beauty, allowing for the hand applied final protective coats to form a mechanical bond with the surface fibers of the timber. Each coat of finish is then hand-rubbed back to give a natural feel, with an unmatched level of durability and long-term performance.

Single-Point Harvesting

dedicated to sustainability

We work directly with our milling partners to select northern old-growth, cold weather, mature timber. The trees we select are 80-120 years old, and are selected using single point harvesting techniques. We typically use the widest first 20 feet of the tree, and only the center cant. This cold weather timber has increased grain density as the tree only grows a few months of the year, which leads to a more solid plank and thus a better performing floor. The timber is air dried for 6-9 months and then kiln dried at a low temperature for 30 days which provides the controlled moisture reduction and a more stable plank.

When our floors are being milled, our team of craftsmen personally hand select, edit, and oversee the culling process. Controlling each phase of flooring from timber selection to final installation allows us to maintain exceptional attention to detail.
